A friend and I are backpacking in Europe for 2 months in April/May. We want to go to Portugal but are having trouble deciding where to stay. I have heard great things about Lagos but have also heard that Lisbon is nice. Which would be a better place to stay? We will probably be staying in Portugal for 4-5 days. Should we just stick to one place or maybe go Lisbon for 3 days and Lagos for 2? Let me know what you think!!

based on what you posted before, Barcelona being the only place you're going in Spain, i'd suggest going to Lagos *and* Seville. [it's a 5½ hr. bus (coach) ride from one to the other.]
you could fly on Ryanair from Girona <an hour from Barcelona> to Faro <the closest airfield to Lagos (pronounced Lagosh)> and after your stay, take a bus <www.eva-bus.net does this route> to Seville. after checking out this beautiful city, fly on to the next place on your schedule.
fyi, i found Barcelona & Seville to both be more interesting/beautiful than Madrid. Madrid has better art museums, but Barcelona & Seville are both have more interesting buildings!

dont mean to place an ad or anything. but atm vueling.com have great specails. 20E within spain, and 40E for other flights. They fly Barca - Lisbon, they also seem very good and scored 2nd on skytrax for budget airlines in Europe behind air berlin and Easy Jet.
As an interesting note the date line is somewhere in Portugal so the flight takes "15 min" from Madrid - Lisbon, how funny!

Sorry I could resist to 'defend' the city I love. In my opinion Madrid is the more interesting city in Spain. Of course every city has something that make it special (and the Sagrada Familia is one of the most special buildings, anywhere), but what makes Madrid better than the other cities, is simply the people. Besides that Madrid is the perfect city to make daytrips from: Segovia and Toledo are a must, but there are also places like Avila, Aranjuez and Chinchon to visit. I don't really like to compare cities, because every place has something special, you just have to find it. But back to the original question, Lagos in the Algarve region is a good place to go, but you could also make a trip north to see Porto.
