Get some waterproof spray such as Kiwi Camp Dry. I got this stuff at Wal-Mart for about 1/2 of the price that they charged for Scotch or 3M. Anyway, the Kiwi stuff was real good. Make sure to spray your backpack several times (especially the top) before you leave for Europe (spray it when it is empty). Also spray your shoes (boots if you bring them) and your jacket (I only bring a windbreaker). A windbreaker should be enough if you also bring a sweater (which can double as a pillow).
Even if they tell you the backpack is waterproof- the spray only costs a few dollars and you will know for sure that your backpack will repel water!

Took your advice Dave and got the CampDri. Sprayed the bejesus out of my pack. Won't know till I am trudging through a downpour how good it is but decided why take the chance? Thanks for the tip. ginger 21 days and counting!

Ginger, actually you can test it before your trip. If you did in fact spray the entire backpack properly, then take a class of water and pour in on top of your pack. It will bead right off - i promise. If any water does not run right off, then you know that you missed a spot. I usually try to spray my pack on 2-3 different times if possible (spray once, let dry, spray again a few days later). I noticed that the straps and some of the strap like material does not absorb the spray as well as the main fabric.

Glad you posted back! I need to get another can I fear. Never even gave a thought to the straps! Was just concerned with the actual 'pack', thinking to keep the stuff inside dry. Sheesh! Like a soaking wet strap would feel good. ginger
