Hello! Me and 2 friends will be traveling to Eastern Europe. We will arrive in Vienna on Jan. 5th in the afternoon. And then take a night train to Krakow on the 8th of Jan. Would anyone recommend taking a day or 1/2 day trip to Bratislava? One of my friends is wanting to go, but I want to make sure we see all we want to in Vienna first. Thank you so much for your input!

Hi Katie, It's very doable to make a daytrip to Bratislava. (it's about 1 hour away by train). Some people like the boattrip to Bratislava (I guess it's an experience on it's own), but this boat will not run between Vienna and Bratislava until the 3rd of March, so you will have to choose for a train, or a bus to get there. (if you have a ticket that also covers the Stadtbahn (a kind of metro-like train), it could be worthwhile to take the Stadtbahn to Gänserndorf, and the train to Bratislava from there, it could save you some money). Check www.bahn.de for timetables But if you only have about 3 days in Vienna (2 whole, and 2 half ones). I would reconsider staying in Vienna, as there is a lot to see. (and if you like history, and arts you can stay for a week easily). I guess it depends on the interests you have, if I would recommened a daytrip or not, if you are happy, to walk around Vienna's centre and a trip to Schloss Schönbrunn, and feel you have seen enough, then yes. If you want to visit some museums, and other attractions (Prater/Belvedere Castle/Kahlenberg), than you will run out of time before you know it. Also note that in Austria the 6th of January is regarded as a national holiday. (I never been there on that day, but I am not sure, what it would mean for museums/attractions being closed or not) I hope you like Vienna, just as much as I do, and you will be having a very good time there.

Thank you for all the great information! I think we'll see how the first day goes. And if things are closed on the 6th we'll probably be staying in Vienna the whole time. Thanks again for your time!
