We were just discussing this topic recently, although it was more to do with skiiing later in the year as opposed to in Winter. The link is: pretravel.proboards1.com/index.cgi?board=anythingelse&action=display&n=1&thread=1344What time of year are you travelling? Other places to add to the above, depending on your budget, are Garmish-Partenkirchen in Germany (Bavaria), Brasov in Romania, the Dolomites (around Cortina) in Italy or even Turin (Torino), or around Chamonix in France.

It depends on the time of year, on that I agree. BUT ...
... if you have never skied before, I wonder if it wise to go skiing at all. One fall, leading to an injury, could mean that you spend a couple of days with some pain, or in the worst case, the end of your trip. I think it's better to do some skiing at home (or at least somewhere close), than on another continent.
If you are serious about skiing, and learning how to, than do it at the end of your trip, and take at least a week of lessons.

if its your first time skiing than you really shouldn't do it in june! the snow will not be the greatest stuff to ski on. you'd be better waiting and doing a long weekend trip in the winter. my cousins in the uk do that often. get a cheap flight to the french alps and ski for a long weekend or a week.

cableguy, it's highly unlikely you'll be able to find any skiing in Europe, especially in May / June. There have been several news reports lately describing the terrible snow conditions at many ski resorts in Europe this year. It's possible there may be a few locations at higher elevations open in the spring, but they might be hard to find and will probably not be the best place for a new skier to take lessons (bare patches and insufficient base snow). If you're intent on trying out skiing or snowboarding, you might consider a short trip to western Canada in the next month or two, or perhaps after November 2007. Most of our ski resorts have LOTS of snow, good lesson programs and ski rentals. Have a look at www.skisilverstar.com for one example. From the U.K., Zoom has relatively inexpensive flights to Vancouver and Calgary year round (AFAIK), and from either of those points it's fairly easy to get connecting flights to several great ski areas via WestJet (one of our budget carriers) or Air Canada. Good luck and happy travels!!!
