Hi. A friend of mine and I are planning to go on a three month tour around Europe in April to June of 2008. Im a big fan of hiking.
We will be going to these places: - Ireland - Wales - London - Paris - Brussels/Brugges - Amsterdam - Berlin and Munich - Prague - Krakow - Vienna - Florence/Venice/Rome - Santorini/Athens - and possibly Istanbul
and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions.

In Santorini... not too sure but you could walk a 3hr trip along the caldera (edge of cliffside) between Fira and Oia. Supposed to be really beautiful and worth it despite the length of the hike/walk.
In Naxos, there's Mt. Zeus which is the highest mountain in the cyclades.
I honestly have no idea concerning the other places.
If you were visiting Rome, you could hike/walk up Mt. Vesuvius in Pompeii as a daytrip from Rome.

An awesome place for hiking in Italy is the Italian Riviera / Cinque Terre. If you were able to fit a few days in there after Florence and before Rome, you'd probably enjoy it. Also, Switzerland (Berner Oberland) is great for hiking, but I notice that's not included on your Itinerary. Just a thought......
Cheers!!!

If you really want to go hiking, you should get some places in the Alps on your list ... My personal favourite is the Hohe Tauern region in Austria. It is a nature reserve, and apart from one or two valleys, there is no traffic allowed (or just the necessary traffic). I spend a lot of vacations in this area.
A place like Zell am See, is easy to reach by train (get to Salzburg first, an than to Zell am See). Personaly I would choose Habachtal (near Bramberg am Wildkogel). It is a little more remote, and less touristic (but there is not a lot to do in the evening).
Also other places like Imst, Innsbruck can offer you some good hiking grounds.
Btw. in Vienna, you can get to the top of the Kahlenberg (well it's more a hill), by Public transport, that is covered in the Vienna card, or the 24-48 or 72hrs cards and you can walk towards Vienna, with some great views. It doesn't take that long, but you have the feeling to be out of the city for a morning or an afternoon. If you take the right directions, you can take a tram back to the city.
