Hey all,
In my travels this summer I will find myself in Malta for a week (the little island in the middle of the Mediterranean). Has anyone been there before? There is only so much that I can get off of websites getting some real info would be schweeet.
Look forward to hearing from you,

Still on my list of places to visit - but have a few friends who have been, either to visit family or on holiday, and they all recommend it. Plus it's still warm even in Winter so there's no real down season (although Summer is the best time to go).
There is a lot of history on the tiny island - Roman, Middle Eastern, Byzantine...just to name a few - and some of the sites date back further than the pyramids in Egypt. There are lots of temples, museums and sites to visit, even just around Valetta. Mdina holds significance in it's relation to the Knights of Malta (during the Crusades) so go there if you're interesting in learning more about that part of history. If you want more than history, apparently the beaches are great and there are lots of watersports in Summer.
Sorry can't give personal specifics on this one, but as I said, my friends rave about it so you'll enjoy whatever you end up doing there.

Welcome drjrobot - and congratulations, I think Malta is a wonderful choice!! I've been there once, and, though more than 10 years already passed by (!!!) I remember it with great pleasure. It's very small, so you'll be able to go around all of it; I stayed in a small fishermen town, it was called Marsaxlock (or something similar.. ), I remember it to be very nice and colourful. As for the weather, it's very hot, but very dry, too, so it's bearable. There's a water problem, though, there isn't much drinkable water on the island. Anyway, as madamtrashheap said, it's a tiny island full of history (Roman, Arabic and so on) and things to see - especially at La Valletta and Mdina, so..have fun and enjoy!!!

My Dad used to live on Malta and can't speak highly enough of this little gem. There is also the neighbouring island of Gozo that is worth a wander around. As far as I know there is a regular ferry that travels from Malta to Gozo. My Dad was a driving instructor on the island so if you are into water sports I would imagine there is plenty to keep you occupied.
