taking the Jungfraubahn up to the Jungfaujoch, the highest railway station in Europe - from my first trip to Europe, was one of the highlights of all my visits to to Switzerland. but, it was pricey, so i haven't repeated it.
back then, one could get ½ price tix for the first trip of the day. it was called "Good Morning Ticket" as i recall. don't know that they still offer this.

FWIW, i find most mountain views <Jungfraujoch is in a class by itself of what i've seen> in Austria to be as beautiful as Switzerland. yet, Austria (in the Eurozone) is significantly cheaper. CHF is too dear a currency.
for most here, appropriate economizing is important.

sheisaeval, my suggestion would be for Gimmelwald. It's basically a small farming community, and there's not much to do in the evenings but it has a unique character so I feel it's well worth a visit. One could certainly use that as a "home base" and travel to other areas, such as the Jungfraujoch that was mentioned by the others (it's in the "other" valley from what I recall, but not that far).
Yes, the Jungfraubahn is "pricey" but I believe there's a discount for the first run of the day (for those that don't mind getting up at a ridiculous hour), and there MAY be a discount if your rail pass includes Switzerland. I'd have to check on the details.
I'll post some replies to your other questions in their respective Threads.
Cheers!!!

FYI: full fare 2nd class tix from Interlaken Ost all the way to the Jungfraujoch and back run €176.60 Yes, the Jungfraubahn is "pricey" but I believe there's a discount for the first run of the day (for those that don't mind getting up at a ridiculous hour), and there MAY be a discount if your rail pass includes Switzerland. i would use interlaken as my base and just travel to gimmewald as a day trip. the reason is that it would be hard for you to get provisions in gimmewald. you can get a round trip fare to gimmewald from interlaken ost for about $50 w/ a discount using your rail pass. IMO it is definately worth a visit!!
