is it true that i need to join a tour in order to see the vatican city? If so could anyone recommend any good ones?

No, you don't have to be in a tour, but if you are in the right tour (not all of them) you can skip much of the lines. This particular service of skipping lines wasn't offered when I was there, so I can't recommend what to use. However, you could use the Vatican's own guided tour service: mv.vatican.va/3_EN/pages/z-Info/MV_Info_Servizi_Visite.htmlThe tricky part is getting your fax confirmation - many people have reported delays in that.
