Hello All! I've been using the site frequently in planning my trip and it's been helpful. This time around, I need some help with the area of Provence. Me and 3 other friends will be landing and staying in Marsaille, France late night and gettign up early with our rental to begin our trip around the Provence area before taking the TGV to Paris. We have 4 and a half days to check out the area (excluding arrival date). We will be stopping by Nice at some point since one of our friends has requested to see it.
With the few days we have, I'm wondering what places people recommend not to be missed. I hear and have seen that Aix de Provence is beautiful and we're willing to splurge to spend a night in the counrtyside of this area. I would also have to check what places the TGV leaves out of (I tihnk it may be Marsaille) so we know where our last place of visit will be. So, any recommendations for areas to visit and itineraries? Has anyone driven around this area...is it difficult?

For sure spend a night in Avignon. I stayed at the Hotel Blauvac there and found it wonderful and cheap. The host Ann? speaks english and its only a few yards off the main square. Avignon is a great base for seeing the region too. Take the TGV from Marsaille its about 45 min or so as I remember. Driving here is easy. I think Nice is a 30 min ride on the train. If you want to visit the villages you will need a car but I found the train great for the towns. The Popes Palace and of course the Pont de Avignon were fun as was the food. Ask ann for a eatery recommendation the one she gave me was without a doubt the best meal of my life.
