Hi everyone! I am going to Germany for Oktoberfest VERY shortly!! My best friend is living in Munich, and we were looking for somewhere to go for two or three days. She was thinking maybe Bern, but after trying to get some information on here about Bern I have been swayed to suggest Gimmelwald. It will be from September 30-October 3. My friend says that it is really cold in Munich right now, so my question is whether we should go to Gimmelwald or not, since the main appeal seems to be its hiking/scenery. I'm just wondering that since it's such a "must-see" if we should see it during the summer another time (when I will surely be back to Europe). Other city suggestions are also more than welcome (seeing Berlin already in this trip). Thanks so much! Kaley

Gimmelwald is a good ways from Munich. Google maps sez it's 450 km - 5½ hour drive. if you don't have a car, and take public transport, per bahn.de it takes 8½ hours or more, with 5 - 7 changes.
other closer places in Austria: Salzburg, 143 km – 1½ hour drive, or Innsbruck, 164 km – less than 2 hour drive.
In Germany, Füssen is just 132 km while Prien is a mere 87 km - just 1 hour away from Munich! [these 2 German destinations are less for nature, more for castles. but Ludwig built his castles in beautiful locations!]
Edit: btw, Prien is between Munich & Salzburg. Füssen is between Munich & Innsbruck

I think Eagle was there last year in either late September or October, so he can/will tell you all about it, when he spots this post.
I have been to Austria to do some hiking in October (a few years ago), and had no problems. The only thing was that a lot of the mountain cabin, were low on staff, because there were only a few people making there way up the mountain. The one thing that is really beautiful, is to see mountains with on them, all the trees, with a 1000 shades of red, yellow, brown colored leaves. If you don't want to go up the mountain, you can also opt for Interlaken, and make trips from there.

kaleykate, as herrbert mentioned I was in Gimmelwald in October of last year and didn't have any problems with the weather at all. It was a bit chilly in the mornings, but when the sun came out it was quite warm. I was quite surprised that even at the top of the Schilthorn (10,000 ft.), I was able to stand out on the patio without a coat.
I spent several hours one afternoon hiking down from the top of the Almmend-Hubel Funicular to Murren, and as I recall I wasn't wearing a coat. I did wear a coat when Paragliding from Murren, but in retrospect I probably could have gone without it. As long as the sun is out, it should be fine.
Gimmelwald is definitely worth a visit!
Happy travels!!!
