Hi, Emcha!
if you don't necessarily follow a straight line, Garmish & Innsbruck aren't too far out of the way for going between these cities. Konstanz [*very* historical German city on Swiss border] is another option. as is the Swiss town of Luzern.
a retired family friend is a former hotelier in Wasserburg am Bodensee, near Lindau. nice resort area.
Zürich hasn't impressed me that much. it's one of the few places i've been that is actually *less* than the sum of it's parts!

I have no idea if this interests you but in Friedrichshafen, you have the Zeppelin museum: www.zeppelin-museum.de/firstpage.en.htm If you like flowers and Gardens, the little Island of Mainau, could be nice. Both places are on the German shores of the lake.

emcha, welcome to the boards!
David's suggestion of Konstanz is a good one, as is herrbert's of Mainau (on my list, haven't been but would like to). Not sure of th etime of year you are planning to travel, but Garmisch-Partenkirchen (as per David) is a very pretty town to visit. In fact, you'll spend the whole journey from Munich to Bern with your face pressed against the window gazing at the scenery!
I'd like to throw Luzern in as my recommendatoin of a place to visit - very pretty and on the way. You could do Konstanz and then Luzern on the way to Bern (which is also a very pretty town) as some nice time-fillers. The only other recommendation is to go straight from Munich to Interlaken then on to Lauterbrunnen-Gimmelwald for the full 3 days in the mountains, but that's only if you feel like spending time right in the heart of the Alps rather than in cities.

don't expect to see Jimmy Page or Robert Plant at the museum. it's not *that* kind of Zeppelin! Mainau has an interesting history, aside from being site of a fabulous world plant collection (there i go again, talkin' 'bout Plant) - oddly enough, the island is a Swedish possession in Germany. one greenhouse there has a tropical climate and thousands of butterflies in it. you can get there via a Causeway by train, bus or car. or, get to the island by boat. I have no idea if this interests you but in Friedrichshafen, you have the Zeppelin museum: www.zeppelin-museum.de/firstpage.en.htm If you like flowers and Gardens, the little Island of Mainau, could be nice. actually, where i typed Garmisch-Partenkirchen i meant to type Füssen. Neuschwanstein is a fabulously beautiful castle near there! [Garmisch-Partenkirchen is wonderful, too!] Garmisch-Partenkirchen (as per David) is a very pretty town to visit. In fact, you'll spend the whole journey from Munich to Bern with your face pressed against the window gazing at the scenery!

Thanks, all. I'll be travelling in early december. Alps sounds nice. Will it be really cold though? I've only ever been to Europe in spring time. Konstanz is right on Bodensee isn't it? hmmm.. (this is me just thinking aloud). any suggestions for interesting places closer to Munich (for day trip sort of thing)

Day trips from Munich...where to start?!!! Of course there are the castles on the Romantic Road (Neuschwanstein, Lindau, etc), Herrenchiemsee, Innsbruck (think David mentioned that), the monastery at Andechs (although check if it's open in December, www.andechs.de ), Dachua (although more like half a day), Rothenburg ob der Tauber (although it's the other direction from Munich to Bern)....that's just a start, I'm sure the others will have more suggestions. Garmisch-P in winter will be packed, and full of snow! Well, hopefully, so that may alter your plans depending on what you were looking for. And cold? Yes. The cities might not have snow by early December, but the Alps should have, although last season was quite late.

late Fall temps in Germany are chilly. Konstanz, being the only German city South of the Rhein, is a little warmer. Konstanz is less important than it once was. [historically, Konstanz is where Czech reformer Jan Hus was burned at the stake by the catholic church, and it's the only place North of the Alps where a catholic pope was chosen, ending the western schism. btw, John Paul 2 expressed "deep regret for the cruel death inflicted" on Hus. even going so far as to suggest Hus might not have been guilty] oh, another sight to see near there is the Rheinfalls - the most impressive waterfall i've seen in Europe (some 80 ft.) Edit: near Konstanz, or maybe it was closer to Überlingen, < actually Unteruhldingen> there's a reconstruction of a bronze-age lake village that's also interesting. it was built shortly after that frozen body was found in 1991 < actually in 1920's> on a glacier at the nearby Austria/Italy border which was determined to be a man from the bronze age. (it was a 5000 year old homicide. they couldn't just "round up the usual suspects" ) the German bronze-age lake village was meant to represent where the "Ice Man" may have come from. look here -> query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=940DE1DC133BF930A35757C0A96E948260&sec=travel&spon=&pagewanted=print

(it's been 15 years) I took a vacation a three years ago in Imst (pretty close to the Ötztal), and there it is impossible to ever forget that name. They have build a complete ötzi-village, to mimic the circumstances those people lived in.

I think I've seen that on CSI-Öztal. Aaaahhhhaaaa! I'm still laughing! Nice one herrbert! ;D I've also spent a lot of time in the Tirol, around Imst, but I haven't made it to the ötzi-village yet. Rafting, mountain biking and skiing yes, BC icemen no. Dodgy Austrian DJs (aka DJ Ötzi)...yikes!

Not in Imst, but a similar one in Switzerland - far too much fun! Will keep this in mind for next Summer!
