I'm in the middle of planning a whirlwind europe circle tour thingy in mid April to mid May, and was hoping for some suggestions on which small towns/villages to hit which is accessible with via rail from Rome up to Paris. I've done my homework and checked out the threads with S. France small towns, but some say that you have to rent a car or take a bus, and unfortunately, I'm at the smallest budget that would be possible for a trip like this! That was such a run on sentence...Thanks!

based on my visits to respective areas of the Riviera, i'd suggest sticking to the Italian side of the border.
my 1st visit to the area, as a student, was to Côte d'Azur. my treatment was so shabby that i avoided the whole Med region for decades. despite the name of Côte d'Azur's biggest city, the people i encountered there were *not* nice!
when i again visited the Riviera, Cinque Terre, the local Italians, as well as other tourists, were delightful! [some German SCUBA divers i encountered there were amused when i quoted a Wernerism, "ein Taucher der nicht taucht, taucht nix!" <it's a play on a German idiom, "a diver who doesn't dive, doesn't count!" it's much funnier in German>]
Edit: now that i think about it, the Taucher in that Wernerism was a water-bird.

Love the stream of consciousness filtering into this Post! ;D monkiejens, most of the small towns in France you'd probably like to visit are accessible by rail (or cheap bus from a main city, eg St Paul de Vence by bus from Nice). Depending on the route you take, you can target quite a few towns, so perhaps look at the towns of interest to help plot your route and also use www.sncf.fr/indexe.htm to see which towns are the easiest to reach on your itinerary.

have heard there are lots of fun places in Northern Italy: Civita di Bagnoregio is a place Steves just raves about, Orvieto is another one <Duomo pics there look amazing!> - i got off the train there, but due to no lockers for my pack, wasn't able to explore as it's a steep climb up from the station to the town. Pisa was a similar situation. but, Siena, Florence, Cinque Terre, etc - i've visited them all - are well worth time to explore. New York Times, www.nytimes.com has a great September 24, 2006 article "The Riches of Lucca." sez some of the best Italian food is in the Tuscan town Lucca! haven't made it back to Europe since i read this, so i haven't checked it out. - d
