I'm just going to list my favourite places that I've been to in each city, but doesn't necessarily mean that you'll like the same too. Not to mention, there's many more sights in each city as well! Guidebooks are extremely useful but here we go:
*** Note, for London, there are lots of free museums and galleries which can put less of a strain on your pockets!
London: Tower of London (if travelling with someone else, can get 2-for-1 entry with Oyster card or National Rail train ticket, British Museum, Tate Modern, Oxford St., Leicester Square, Kensington Gardens, St. Paul's Cathedral, Victoria & Albert Museum, and St. James' Park
Paris: Eiffel Tower, Napoleon's Tomb, Jardin des Plantes, Pompidou, Musee d'Orsay, Louvre, Rodin Museum
Rome: Borghese Gallery, St. Peter's, Vatican Museum (well, technically in Vatican City...), Palatine Hill, Colosseum and Trevi Fountain

That's a great list, PONR! I would really recommend getting DK Eyewitness guidebooks out of the library. They list so many sites, with very nice pictures, so you get a clear idea of what you can see. Another place I would look is Frommers guides online - they have things like "If you have 3 days in Paris", .... Like here, for example: www.frommers.com/destinations/paris/0062010007.html
