What a great board! Thanks for all of the help. Has anyone taken the Hydro from Naples to Sorrento? We will be coming from Rome and this sounds like fun. Mike

Yep! It is fun, costs around Euro9, takes around 30mins and they leave roughly every 2 hours. (Try www.alilauro.it for timetables - you can buy tickets on the day - and click on the English link at the top right). It's a great way to see the coastline from another angle, although I also love driving down that manic highway that clings to the cliffs and gives spectacular views across the bay too. There's a hydrofoil that goes from Naples to Capri too, but if you're staying in Sorrento then you can take either the hydrofoil or barca (slow boat, cheaper too) that both leave from the Marina Grande. I've also taken the Circumvesuviana (train) which takes around 60mins, so either way works. Perhaps you could take the hydrofoil to Sorrento then the train up to Pompei and back to Naples for your journey back to Rome. If you do take the hydrofoil to Sorrento, when you arrive at the port, take one of the orange busses up the hilll (if you have luggage) - tkts are usually available from the driver, but sometimes you have to purchase them at the Tabbacchi (will have a "T" sign at front) at the port (is opposite the boat tkt office, on the water under the cliff). You can walk up some rather steep steps, but if you have luggage the busses are a better choice and drop right in the centre of town in Piazza Tasso.
