lovetotravel, Welcome to the Boards!
Regarding your questions, it would help to have a bit of further information on your situation. For example, where are you travelling from? If you're located in North America, you'll probably lose the first day in flight times and time zone changes (not to mention jet lag!), so you'll have eight days to work with.
It would also help to have some information on the places and sights that your group of four is most interested in? Do you want to see architecture, art or other things? Italy and Austria both have lots of great possibilities. Rome especially needs at least four days.
With such a short trip, open-jaw flights would most definitely be a good idea.
Any further details you can provide would sure help!
Cheers!

It depends a little on what you find attractive about Austria. If you like to visit Vienna, you could consider splitting the time you have between Rome and Vienna.
If you like to see the mountains, you can just as well stay in Italy, as the Northern part of the country has higher mountains than Austria. You could go: Rome (4-5 days), Florence, (2 days), Lake Garda or Lake Como (2 days)
