How necessary is it to bring your own towel? Is it worth ordering a special travel towel? I am trying to travel as lightly as possible so I think that if I have to bring a towel, it definately makes sense to buy one like this but I don't want to shell out $20 if it's not worth it.

most places did not supply towels if youre staying in hostels. i bought the adventure travel towel... i think it was ~25 CDN. soooooooo worth it! the best towel i ever bought! i take it everywhere with me. dries super fast and takes up little room.

I agree, a towel that dries quickly is worth it!! If you bring a regular towel, it probably won't dry quickly, then you end up packing a semi-wet towel, which will smell...
You don't need to bring a huge one, just one that's big enough to dry yourself after a shower! Usually hostels don't provide towels... some hotels might, and some places might charge you extra.

joan, to quote from an earlier reply that I posted,
IMO that's an essential item for travel (I believe the towel shown in your link is a "chamois" style towel). As the others have pointed out, it's well worth the cost.
One other point that I'd like to mention concerning towels, is that even where these are provided, in some cases they will be different than the towels that most of us are used to. Several of the "budget hotels" I've stayed in provided very thin towels in the rooms, almost like large "dish towels". I'm sure this is a cost savings measure, as these will probably be cheaper to launder than the thick "terry towels" (especially in water savings?). They were adequate for one use, but certainly didn't have the "comfort factor" of a terry towel. From what I recall, these were most prevalent in Italy.
Cheers!!!
