I realize that part of the fun of being in Europe involves catching trains at all hours of the day or night, but I was wondering if anyone has any good advice about flying around Europe? I know with the de-regulation of the EU and airlines there are lots of smaller cheaper flight options (EasyJet, Ryan, etc). Do you have to book the flights in advance to get the good deals? I don' t have an agenda yet and would like to keep it that way as much as possible.
Thanks, Will

That's a hard call... say you decided to try and get a cheap flight on a spur of the moment but couldn't-you might be stuck somewhere wasting away your time until you can.
I would be more comfortable winging it using a railpass but flying might require a little more planning. We used those Europe by Air vouchers to fly a few times and it required some definate planning.
If you don't mind spending a few extra days somewhere though (if you have enough time), it might be worth a try.

Just read that EasyJet plans to buy Go, and that EasyJet has a purchase in the works for Deutsche BA, British Airway's German subsidiary. <br> If there are fewer airlines, the prices will prolly go up. - d

FYI - EasyJet has already bought Go.....the timetables/destinations/fares are fully integrated for now...in another couple of months Go will be gone forever and EasyJet is all you will see.

most likely, i would want to fly to Helsinki from London or Frankfurt.
the sites i've checked don't give cheap flight info for Helsinki, at all! so, i figgured i'd have to fly to Stockholm and take a boat. If i make a trip with my *dream* route, at all.

EuropeByAir offers flights from London or Frankfurt to Talinn, Estonia, for 99$. Talinn is a short boat ride from Helsinki. www.europebyair.com/map/default.aspRyanair flies from London Stansted or Frankfurt Hahn to Stockholm. Flights in March are as cheap as 16.90 Pounds and 33.39 Euro respectively. www.aerfares.net/index.php

There are too many cheap airlines nowadays (arefares has added some more recently) to remember all the routes... You should check the whole list of destinations on the websites I mentioned to see which is closest to Italy... I believe there should be some place in southern Italy. Otherwise, your best bet is to fly into Rome and take a train to Sicily.

The southernmost flights to Italy I find on aerfares.net are Napoli (Naples) or Alghero in Sardegnia (that's the "other" main Italian island). On EuropeByAir I find flights to Sicilia from places in Italy, but for 99$ plus taxes that's not a big deal...
