I've been planning my Rome-Venice vacation and have been looking at all the options. My plan was to fly into Rome for 3 nights then take the eurorail to Venice for 3 nights. The rail for two people would cost $140 with a seat reservation.
I was suprised to find out that I could take Lufthansa airlines one-way to Venice for two people for $130. That's with taxes and all fee's. That's great. It's a lot faster, and we know time is money when it comes to traveling.

You probably have more info on this than me, but keep in mind where the train station is located vs. the airport as well as the time it takes to board the plane and get off vs. a train.

Good point Patrick. The station in Venice is right on the Grand Canal, vs airport several miles away. Same with Rome.....easy to walk to station, long way to airport. But, as you say, time saved by flying. However, the ride from point to point is a nice one indeed!

don't know about italy, but germanrail did a study some years ago about transit times. From city center to city center, rail was faster than car for all routes, and faster than air for many routes.
maybe there is a similar example for italy?
also think about the time it takes to get through security at the airports.
