Just out of curiosity, can you by open tickets (not open-jaw, just open) on the internet? From the research I've done, it seems like you can only do one way or round trip with specific dates. If not, how do you arrange getting an open ticket? Direct from the airline?
Also, are Youth discounts only available through sites like Council Travel? Because regular travel sites don't make any mention of anything other than standard adult fare.
Thanks...

I've looked on the internet for open tickets as well and never really found much.
Your best bet is to go through a travel agent. Youth fares don't seem to come up that much on the internet but a travel agent will be able to find you both a youth or an open fare. If you don't get the answers you want at one, go to another.
Ours was an open youth fare through KLM. It was $899 CND ($568 US) for a year open ticket, in and out of Amsterdam.
Some travel agents will help you more than others. Keep looking for one until you find one that is willing to put time into searching for the best fares for you. Often smaller travel agencies need the business a bit more and will tend to put some effort into it.

did you fly to Amsterdam because this was the cheapest destination, or just where you wanted to start out?
Do you know where the cheapest flights are for you starting point?

I've also looked into this. more for open jaw than open, there is an outfit called air-hitch.org that sells what are basically 1-way tix. but they are not tix - they are vouchers. they claim to be "space available." it looks interesting, but i can't get info about flights out of anyplace but NYC! If you're near there, it might be worth a look.

We flew into Amsterdam as it was the only place that we could get a year open ticket for.
We could have flown into London but it would have only been a 6 month open ticket.
It was the cheapest option for us as at the time we were under 26 and got a youth fare for $899 CND through KLM. (And yes, "me", that's about $5 in US funds! I know what you are thinking!)

you must think i'm some kind of xenophobe, kim! it ain't so!
Canada is america's best friend! the world's longest undefended border seperates usa from canada. i like canada. one of my early jobs was working at the canadian consulate in my hometown. All the things Ron & Bill said about UK are more true of canada!
it was on your side of the border that i heard talk of a monetary union between Canada & US. nothing on that topic has come up in american press. A cn$ is worth less than a us$. big deal. your cash is more interesting to look at!

It's prettier, I do agree with you there!
It's kind of sad in a way, with all these countries using the Euro. Some of them had some seriously funky money-like the Netherlands.
I know, it's funny the US/Canada thing-we go across the border all the time. I dont even see a point in having them. (Although I have to say we usually go for gas, cheese and baseball games!)

Just got some Euros yesterday. 1 each - 5, 10 & 20 Euro bills.
Not as interesting as cash it replaces, in many cases.
