Hey guys... I just booked my ticket! I leave for Glasgow on April 25th, and fly out of Amsterdam July 16th. Meeting up with my boyfriend in Scotland (he's doing SWAP over there right now) and then we're hitting the continent for a couple months. We're still not sure about how we want to travel though. We're starting our route from Paris, through Spain, southern France, Italy, Austria, then Germany if we have time, up to Amsterdam. We were considering a rail pass, but we really aren't sure how long we're going to spend in each place. We think we might just do point-to-point tickets, and some bus trips...does this sound ok or will it get too pricy?? We want to be really flexible, so the 2 month consecutive eurail would be our best bet I know...but if we don't end up traveling enough to make the cost worth it we'd regret spending the extra money. Have any of you gone without a rail pass?
Thanks for the help, Robyn

Hi, I just got back from 4 months over there. Spent 5 weeks in UK and the rest on the continent. I too chose the consecutive passes for their flexibility and ease. And they were both of those things. But......I got the one month Britrail and travelled 13 days with it. And for the 3 month Eurail I finally counted it up and spent a total of 27 days actual train travel. When I do it again I will not get the consecutive pass....the 'days in a month' will work better. In my experience that is. (sorry...had a granddaughter 'emergency' and had to sign off quick!) As for point to point tickets, depends on your budget I think more than anything else. Tickets in the UK, BeNeLux, France and Germany are quite high. Especailly the UK! Italy is very reasonable no matter the distance. UK just had another price hike this month so they are more still. Best bet I'd say is to look at your itenerary and try and figure out where you will be using the trains, then go to the web sites and check out the prices for the individual legs. You may well do better just buying them as you go. But I appreciated being able to 'prepay' that and not having to worry about the funds as I went along. What I personally kept running into, and the reason I did not use my pass as much as I thought, is falling in love with wherever I stopped and staying much longer than I originally anticipated doing. An advantage of a wide open, solo trip....I could go or stay when I was done seeing what I wanted. BTW......my Eurostar/Chunnel ticket from London to Brussells was 45 pounds....one way, with a Eurail pass. Bought it 4 days ahead in Edinburgh.....so don't go by the prices listed on their site. But since it is getting closer to high season I would make arrangements as soon as you know for sure when you are going. ging
