3 of us are traveling from Spain to Italy over a period of 2 weeks. One of us (not me) thinks it would be better to rent a car (cheaper, save time waiting on trains) whereas I think trains would be best (easier, no hassle with driving directions). Also, I heard a lot of cities are hard to drive into. I don't want to get a car, so I need some resons why it's a bad idea. Any suggestions?

gas costs 2 - 3 times as much as it does here. but, a car makes it easier to get to the small towns in spain & italy that have no train station.

Another reason....
Parking costs can be pricy and hard to find.
I would seriously discourage using driving as your primary transportation. You can always rent one for a day or two somewhere if you wanted.

It depends what places you want to go. If you only visit cities, go by train. If you want to see the countryside, car is the way to go. Moneywise, there should not be a big difference for a party of 3. Rental is cheaper if you book ahead and for long periods (weeks rather than days). You can plan your schedule to start in a city for 3-4 days, then rent a car for a week, drop it off and spend your last 3-4 days in another city. Also, look out for Rail Europe "Rail & Drive" pass, it might be good for you. Go for a compromise that will satisfy all of you.
