athens airport

I think that the athens airport is not in the city, but I am assuming they have shuttles into town. I arrive around 6pm and I am wondering if I will be dropped of at a central location in athens from which to find a hostel?

That sort of all depends on what hostel you are planning to stay at-do you have one in mind? I wouldn't just arrive without sorting out some sort of accommodation before hand.

Athens new Venizelos airport is 25KM east of the city.
The metro line to the airport is due to be open during 2003, so watch out for it.
If not, you can either:
1. take bus E94 to the nearest metro station, Ethniki Amyna, and continue underground to your destination. This bus runs every 15 minutes 6AM-8.15PM and every 30 minutes 8.30PM-midnight.
2. take bus E95 to Syntagma square in downtown. This bus runs every 25-35 minutes day and night.
Fare is 3Euro, and allow you unlimited travel on urban transportation for the day.
Another airport bus, E96, runs to Pireaus port - best for those heading to the islands.
