I just wondered how easy it was to go from place to place using a Eurail pass Do we need to make calls to confirm our day of travel? How far in advance do you need to book sleeper cabins -on average? How much documentation do you need to have easily accesssible? ie. Passports, visas etc. How much time do you need to allow for boarding? Do you need to get to the station an hour before hand? How easy is it to find transportation to various parts of the city? Sorry for all the questions - I hope someone won't mind taking the time to try to help... it would really be appreciated because as you can tell, I'm clueless!!

Do we need to make calls to confirm our day of travel?
No, if you have a reservation you will have a something with your seat numbers on it. If you don't have a reservation, then you just show up.
How far in advance do you need to book sleeper cabins -on average?
Usually it's best to do it with the most time possible. If you know in a week you will be leaving on a certain time, just book it to be safe. Chances are slim on getting a sleeper if you try to do it on the day or day before.
How much documentation do you need to have easily accesssible? ie. Passports, visas etc.
Your passport and railpass. A visa is a sticker stuck inside your passport so it will be in there already.
How much time do you need to allow for boarding?
Depends. If you have a reservation, I would arrive about 15 minutes early just to find your seats etc. If it's unassigned seating and you want to get seats, show up earlier (at least 25 min.) IF the train is starting from that station. If it's not, then it won't be there until the time it's supposed to show up. I would always get to the station at least 15 minutes early.
There were times when the whole train was reserved and we had to sit on our packs in between cars. Not bad for a short ride but I would always make reservations for a long ride. Note-always get non-smoking seats, even if you are a smoker. You can go to the smoking car and smoke but it is NASTY. Also, you can reguested seats facing in the direction that the train is going, if you prefer.
Do you need to get to the station an hour before hand?
No, not unless you figure it's going to be a crazily busy train that starts from your destination and you have no reservations.
How easy is it to find transportation to various parts of the city?
In most cases, extremely easy. Pretty much every train station is set up for it and it's a breeze.

Ask away.. the questions you are asking are probably ones that tons of other people are wondering about-I know I had the same sort of questions before we left!
One other thing I just thought about-if you are planning on doing any travel in the UK, when we were there (unsure if this is still the case), reservations were free and definately a good idea. Before we found this out, we were rushing the doors with everyone else trying to find seats in a huge panic.. then we heard about the reservations and could calmly wander to our seats.. much nicer!
