I found that some other railpass sites try to inflate the cost of point to point tickets so you will want to buy the rail pass. But this site seems to be fairly accurate. I went to www.railsaver.com/railsaver.asp . Then I entered the Scandinavian itinerary I had planned. I had already figured out the approximate cost for point-to-point tickets, and had decided the ScanRail pass would not be economical. This site confirmed my estimates and said specifically that I would be better off buying the tickets in Europe. They did provide the option to buy the tickets ahead of time if I wanted to, but said there would be "convenience charges". I think this page might only work this way if you select the option "Only if railpasses save me money". There's an option on another page on the site for help deciding about the appropriate railpass if you haven't set a firm itinerary.
