I have seen that it is recommended to get a reservations on all train rides, but that seemed to be suggested in the Summer months. How about Sept and October? I do know at least you must on overnight rides for sure. I am just trying to save the hassle.

It's really no hassle....don't stress over this. ;D Some of the trains you will be using will no doubt require a reservation, regardless of the season. They are generally 1-3 euros, and just try and arrange it a couple of days (if possible) before you are going to travel. Easiest way to do it is when you arrive in a city, before you leave the station, go and get your reservation right then for the day you are leaving. Saves a trip back to the station during your stay. But many times I decided at the last minute where I was going next and bought the reservation just before the train was due to leave.
