Looks like the cheap airlines are indeed starting to impact the trains. For those of you using the trains on your trip looks like fares, especially PTP, are becoming easier on the budget. Info here: www.msnbc.com/news/948578.asp

At the bottom of the article, there are links to other budget travel related articles. There is one about canadian vacations and buying cheap canadian stuff!

Oh Jen, And I always adored going into 'East' Berlin to shop...and how many many hundreds of posts have been made here regarding heading off to Eastern Europe coz it is so much better for the wallet or where/what city in any given country has the best and cheapest shopping. Or don't go to Scandanavia unless you have a healthy budget as it is sooooo expensive. Sorry....this seems a petty, thin skinned remark from you given that this is a 'backpackers/budget travel' board don't ya think? Everyone is out there looking for a bargain...some countries cost more, some less...it's the nature of travel. Don't think anyone is intentionally trying to 'insult' any given country. Do you, honestly?

oh god, I must have high hormones or something. It is so hard to write something and to have the person reading it on the other end interpretate it correctly. I didn't take it as an offense or anything. It's just that it seems our dollar is so poor and it is making my budget tight on my upcoming trip. And then I see this journalist telling people to come to canada because it is so cheap.. it just makes me sad cause to visit the states and the Euro alliance countries is so expensive for us canadians! I don't know really how to explain what i meant, but trust me, if I was american, i'd take advantage of it too! hope no harm done and I assure you I'll try to find a way to express myself a little better as it seems I'm always getting people confused! xoxo Jen

I don't think anyone is trying to insult anyone - everyone is always out to find somewhere where their money goes further. Everyone goes to Prague cause it's cheap.. (and beautiful!)
It is a hard pill to swallow to cross the border and have your $1 turn into 70 cents though. It's a Canadian thing to bitch about our dollar though Ging, it's just one of those things.

Ah! A canadian pal, I think I am finding out that only us canadians can understand the feeling I was trying to explain. I guess it's fun to blabber on about how it's annoying to lose money, but then turn around and do the same thing to another country if we can! Thanks kim! xoo Jen

Along the same lines as me going to UK and having my $1 get me about 70 pence? I'll grant you at present my dollar is stronger than yours, but we all fight currencies everywhere and I can't recall complaining about Brits taking 'cheap' trips to the US. ;D And Jen, I so understand your thought on having what you write/what they read not equal the same. Just ask my daughter! ;D My 'tone and phrasing' is forever p#ssing her off!

one of Canada's *many* charms is the feeling we (Americans) get upon opening the charge card statement/ bank statement (for ATM withdrawls) after we return from a trip to the North.
the charges are all cut *way* down!
when you pay for a sitdown meal in Canada with plastic, the price seems a little high, but not much. when the bill comes, the dollar figure is cut almost in half! the frugal guy in me sez "wohoo!!" ;D ;D
Sorry, Jennifer.
