whats the difference between 2nd and 1st class? I could get a 5 country, 15 day youth 2nd class for 556 or the same as 1st class for 120$ more.
Would I get any priorites, more comfortable seats, etc by having 1st class. I'm pinching pennies, but i worked my itinerary down from needing the 3 month 1200$ pass... so i can spare 120$ i think. Not if it isnt worth it tho.
I guess my question is... is 1st class more reliable, more comfortable?
thankyou :james (buffalo,ny)

Hi, I had a first class pass....being over 26 it was the only one I could get. The difference between them depends on several variables.....what country are you in, what sort of train are you on, and honestly, how old is the train itself. Many routes I took had actually no difference at all other than having a '1' painted on the outside of the car, but this was on local 'milk run' type journeys. On any of the inter-city runs or 'fast' trains there was a noticable difference though....the aisles were wider (making it much easier to get my pack on and off), seats bigger and more comfortable, and the refreshment carts always hit first class first. ;D (but bring your own, the carts are hugely overpriced!) And it was never as crowded in first as second, although I was on many trains that were full in both and this in the winter. Any trains I was on in the BeNeLux had a distinct difference between classes, in England very little overall. Same with France vs. Italy. Everywhere, first class mostly held 'business men' types while second was students, tourists and families. So it was generally quieter in first if that matters, except for the incessant ringing of cell phones. ging
