Hi Everyone!
I'm going to be traveling around Spain and Eastern Europe this February and March and am trying to figure out if it will be better for me to have a sleeping bag or just a sleep sack. I traveled all around Europe last summer with a homemade cotton sleep-sack and it was fine, but seeing as how I will be traveling during a colder time of year, I'm wondering if just the sleep-sack will be warm enough?
Please let me know what you think!
Thanks! Sara

it depends on your plans. do you plan to hostel - sleeping bags are often a no go in hostels, they should have blankets or comforters there. if you plan to camp - a cotton sleep sheet prolly wouldn't hack it if you campout.
but, camping out also requires other gear, at least a tent. Winter camping in Eastern Europe does *NOT* sound fun to me.

No, I was definitely not planning on going winter camping in Eastern Europe. I was planning on staying in hostels....will I be okay with a sleep sheet in most hostels? And if so, what is the best kind? My cotton one is no longer useable, so I'd need to get a new one..

There are very few instances where a sleepsheet is either desirable or necessary. If you have an idea of which hostels you will be staying at, see if any of them charge extra for bedding. Most do not.
Some people have posted they like to take a pillowcase with, but that's a lot easier than a sleepsheet.

Absolutely bring a pillow sham with you - you won't regret it! I find it too weird to sleep on pillow shams that aren't mine and you never know if someone left some drool there...

sara8, first of all as David indicated, you likely won't be allowed to use a sleeping bag in any Hostels, due to the possibility of "cross contamination". They don't want to take the risk of having bed bugs or other contaminants take up residence in the Hostel mattresses. Regarding the sleep sheet issue, many Hostels include a sleep sheet (with built-in pillow case) and a quilt or blanket in the cost of the room. I usually have a sleep sack with me on all travels, but I haven't yet had any occasion to use it. Many people seem to prefer the silk sleep sacks, as they're supposedly cool in summer and warm in winter (although I can't verify that from personal experience). This is the one I use - travelstore.ricksteves.com/catalog/index.cfm?fuseaction=product&theParentId=126&id=155 (the same store also offers a cotton sleep sack). Good luck and happy travels!
