Hi! I'm planning backpacking through most of Western Europe (France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece .... not necessarily in that order) from June to August. I'm trying to pack light and I'm wondering what is the best color of clothing to bring? I'm leaning towards darker colors as it won't show dirt as easily (and I'm spill prone) but my friends seem to think I will get too hot and may look out of place! Now, I'm not really worried about getting too hot (I realize I'm going in summer so I'll be packing weather appropriate clothing) and I don't plan on wearing all black, all day, everyday or anything like that. Any tips/suggestions?

Dark pants are a good idea because if you spill or they get some dirt or grease on them, it won't be too noticeable. But since you'll be backpacking for a few months, you're going to be washing your clothes a lot, so I don't think it really matters what colors you have on top. Believe me, walking around in Europe in June, July, and August you're going to be really hot and sweaty, and chances are, wearing a shirt more than a few times before washing is probably going to gross you out (or at least your travel partners! ). Plan on washing your shirts every other night in a sink, and you can bring whatever colors you like.

met a Canadian on a train in Sweden. she was dressed in all black.
she volunteered that all her clothes for her travels were black, so she needn't worry about color bleed when she washed them together.
but, this was in Skåne - the weather doesn't get so hot there! ;D
