Hi. I'm trying to plan my route for this summer and I had a question about travelling between Greece and Italy. If I purchase a rail pass, can I use it on the ferry between Patras and Bari? Or does anyone know of a better and cheaper way to get to Italy from Greece? Thanks.

There are so many different ferry lines, and I am not sure if the rail pass is good on each and every one. In any case, it is not that expensive to just get a deck ticket. Cabins cost more. If you are limited for time, taking a plane can be helpful. There is Alitalia, Olympic Airways, and I think Aegean Airways. This link has flight as well as ferry info. www.ferries.gr/

Ferry lines covered by Eurail pass:
When you pass is valid in Greece, free ferry crossings from Patras, Igoumenitsa and Corfu to Brindisi (Italy) operated by HML (Hellenic Mediterranean Lines) and Blue Star ferries. In July and August, a US $20 High season surcharge must be paid. Port taxes are extra. When your pass is valid in Greece, free ferry crossings from Patras, Igoumenitsa to Ancona and Bari (Italy) operated by ‘Superfast Ferries’. in July and August, the equivalent of US $20 high season surcharge must be paid. Port taxes are extra.

I am understanding that you can take the ferry from Brindisi to Patras for free. Do you mean that it is considered a one day off of your Europass days? So, I will use 2 of my 10 days crossing to and from. Or, is this a free bonus because I will use the train in Greece to get to AThens? Will this depend on the time I depart from Brindisi. If I leave at noon, and arrive at 8 the next morning, will this use 2 days just going one way? How long is the ferry crossing? Do we have to book to get a super fast ferry? Thanks D

I was also thinking of taking the ferry from Italy to Greece. On raileurope.com, it says the travel time between Brendisi and Patras is 12 hours . But what I was wondering was if you have your own quarters on the ferry? Does it travel at night (I would assume not)? I would hope it travels at night and be able to sleep on it because 12 hours on a boat is just way to long if i'm concious.

The only way you get your own quarters on the ferry is if you pay for a cabin. Most of the backpackers we saw just crashed on the deck, or the airplane-like seating. I think most of the crossings are at night, but not sure about super fast ferries. We took an overnighter from Venice to Corfu. D I am not sure about your railpass and how it works with the ferry, but you might find answers on the ferry link I posted.
