I am planning about 3 overnight trains this summer to go between the further-apart cities. Can I actually sleep in just a 2nd class seat? Don't really want to pay for a bed, but I don't know how these trains are either on the overnight treks. Crowded? Uncomfortable??

I haven't travelled on an overnight train but I don't think there is a rule that says you can't sleep in your seat. It all really depends on whether or not you personally can sleep sitting in a seat. I guess there is also the security issue of your belongings while you are sleeping.

Well, sometimes I can sleep sitting up. Mostly I have a problem with noise and such. Also, if the trains are dirty like American trains I might have a problem.

Well you could always try sleeping in your seat for the first night train. After that you can decide what you'd prefer for the rest of the trip.

You can do it - but uncomfortable is right! And crowded. Night trains are popular and are almost always full. You will need reservations.
Considering you will probably have someone in the seat next to you, space is limited.
As far as cleanliness - it depends on the country as to how nice the trains are.
