Using a Eurail pass, you could go from Venice to Milan, which takes about 4 hours, I believe. From there you can catch an overnight train to Barcelona. However, I don't think this train leaves every day, so you should check the schedule to avoid losing time if you do not want to stay in Milan.

eurail pass is def. the way to go... make sure you know how much time between each cities... it's very decieving on maps, i'm pretty sure there is an over night train from milan to barcelona everyday, so i don't think you have to worry about that. have a great trip!

otoh....this is a loooooonnnnggggg train journey! Check out the budget airlines from either Venice, Milan, or even Florence.....all of which are 2-4 hours away from Venice and would still greatly shorten the trip.

Jovial, What time is that flight? A heads up for Venice flights....don't book the first ones out in the morning if you can avoid it! The vaporettos don't start running till 5-530 with any regularity, you need to get to P Roma to catch a bus (the cheap way) to the airport. My flight was at 0700, needed to be there nlt 0600...vaporetto at 0535, 30 minutes to P Roma, 25 minutes bus......wasn't going to work. I ended up changing hotels that last night, staying at P Roma so I could be sure to have 'land' transport available in the morning.
Venice airport for early morning or late night flights is a logistical nightmare! Otherwise, it is just fine of course. ;D
