Ahhh, to be 18 again and go backpacking through Europe!
I wouldn't worry about it. Just be safe and make sure your valuables are secure and you will have a great time. I once had everything I brought with me stolen, but I still had a great time.
Good luck, Ray

Ray, you old man you! ;D
Jason, I did my first backpacking trip (3 months in Australia) a week after I turned 19. Had a blast. Can't see you running into any difficulties-be careful with your finances and you will be fine!

was 18, just out of high school, on my first solo trip - to Northern Europe. had fun, but i was still too immature to get enough planned.
also, i didn't know where to get needed info. that was nearly 20 years ago - the web was an unknown thing. the books i saw, like Foder's, were aimed at adults with plenty of cash.

I just did 6 weeks in Europe with 2 friends and I'm 18--one of my friends was 17 during the trip. We lied about her age several times, but...It was no problem for any of us. We were often the youngest travelers in hostels, but everyone wished they'd started as young as us! Go for it, this is not something to put off until you are older. Travelling was the first time I felt truly independent and responsible. Managing train transfers in Hungarian was a real challenge, but we did it, and I'm so glad we did. Good luck with your adventure!

I first went to Europe when I was 14, again when i was 16, again when I was 18. When I was 18 I actually backpacked around alone. So, you are not too young.

i'm eighteen and when i graduate (in may) a friend and i are planning on backpacking in the u.k. and (hopefully) france. i used to live in ireland (we moved the states when i was thirteen) but i'm still a little nervous about going, especially since my friend has never even been on a plane before. would you suggest finding someone experienced to go with us, even for just part of the trip?

You'll be fine - honest. Everyone is nervous, even those that have travelled before. A new experience is always a bit scary but once you get on that plane, you will be so excited.
I just went to Asia for the first time last year and I was nervous and didn't know what to expect. The minute I got onto the plane it was gone. And not counting Asia, at that point I had travelled to 22 countries.
So don't worry, you will have a blast!

My sister was 15 when she lived in Japan for one year - she didn't even speak the language! 18 is NOT too young . . . Having said that if you are an impressionable young person the agressiveness of some of the men in Europe may be too much for you. But I think with friends you'll be just fine. Happy travelling!

Well given that this thread began in poster has probably made a decision by now! ;D
But to answer the question, no, it's not too young. I travelled alone for 2 months at age 18.

I met an 18 year old guy while traveling this summer. He had decided not to go to university right out of high school and traveled instead. We got along fabulously and I stayed longer in Paris than I had originally planned because we had so much fun. We are going back to Paris in January for 2 weeks to hang out again. He had no problems because of his age (although he is more mature than most 18 year olds), and loved being on his own in our great world.
