25 year old female - traveling alone...... should I be nervous? I'm far from naive ...and confident about this trip but whenever I tell someone I'm going solo - they ask me if I think that is such a good idea? Is it their own personal fear or intimidation of traveling alone - or am I missing something?

It's their fear.....traveled 4 months on my own, and another month since that trip....with never a problem. Just be aware of your surroundings and take the normal precautions you would at home.
Have fun, ginger

Nervous-excited.. yes.. nervous-scared, no.
As long as you have common sense, which I'm sure you do!, you'll be fine.
Also, if you are staying in hostels I bet you won't be travelling alone for long. It's so easy to meet travel companions while staying in hostels-it's fun, you can travel with people for a bit, then do your own thing etc.
My friend and I ended up travelling with 4 people for 2.5 months during our trip through Australia (2 British girls, a Welsh girl and a British guy).

I would concur with the other comments on your question. Although my perspective is a bit different (being male), I don't think you need to worry. That's not to say that you won't have problems, but if you practise "situational awareness" you should be able to stay out of trouble. For some interesting thoughts on the subject, check Rick Steves web site (Graffiti Wall, Solo Travel section). Many of the people who posted comments there say they PREFER solo travel, although dinner time seems to be a problem for some. Also check the RS site for info on common scams (I believe they have a section on that?). Although I've never been victimized, I believe pickpockets and petty crime are the most common problems. Wear your money belt!!! (NOT outside your clothes, they way Rick Steves noticed a bunch of his readers doing it in Rome). Beware groups of children "swarming" in some countries, especially those holding newspapers to hide their hands. You'll undoubtedly have a safe and memorable holiday. Have a great time on your trip!!!!
