So lets say I am in Paris and I want to go to the Louvre. Do I take my pack with me when I leave the hostel for the day or is that something that will be relatively secure if I leave it at the hostel somewhere? Will a pack fit into the lockers some hostels provide? Can I chain it to the bedpost of my assigned bed? Is there anything else I can do with it to avoid carrying it everywhere I go?

It depends on the size of your pack. What I did was I packed valuables and anything of and importance in my toiletry bag which was small and it was THAT bag that I made sure ot have locked at all times. My backpack was pretty big and I think there was only one place where I was able to put the pack inside the locker. The rest of the time, I just left it lying on the floor at the end of the bed, or leaning against the wall next to the bedpost and out of people's way. However, I had my toiletry(sp) bag inside the locker as soon as I got the room. So in case someone took off with my backpack they will just get away with clothes (half of them smelly) and nothing else that could prevent me from getting back to the US.

If your hostel has a safe, you can ask for it to be locked up but I'm a bit hesitant still about that... This is a popular product: www.qksrv.net/click-711188-1492688I think the neck one would be particularly handy. Kim
