This can't be the most intelligent question, but what do I do with my backpack on the trains and buses? Do they have compartments, racks or do you just keep them next to you?

on trains there are overhead compartments....in couchettes I used my pack as a pillow or footrest.

this is good for security. you don't want your pack "walking off" as you sleep! also, when riding in daytime in a compartment, it's better to put your pack on the rack across from you. you can keep an eye on it that way. (tip from Snorkleman) - d in couchettes I used my pack as a pillow or footrest.

also, if riding in a train compartment, it's a good idea to be friendly with the others in the compartment. that way, they'll watch your stuff while you use the wc.
i was worried about my luggage when i rode a bus. it was stored underneath, so every time the bus stopped, and passengers got on/off, the luggage compartment was opened. as i saw no controls on luggage being taken in or out, i guess it was on the honor system, which worried me a little.

Some trains have luggage racks at the end of the train too, but overhead is your best bet. Don't be deterred if your pack is large, if it fits then stuff it up there. For the most part you shouldn't have a problem... I've heard horror stories from overnight trains though.
