Hi,
does a reservation have to be made a couple days in advance, or can i just show up 10min. before trains arrival and make the reservation ?

im not sure about other countrys, but in germany you only need a reservation if you travel on long routes between large cities (hamburg-munich for example) and also only at friday or late sunday/early monday, when people work in another city and come home for the weekend or travel back to work. you should always find a free seat during the other times; i never buy a reservation. but i have to change seats sometimes...

depends on where you travel. i believe all routes we took in france required a reservation. i wouldn't recommend just showing up the day of. we usually booked the next train out the day we arrived in that city. even at that sometimes we oculdn't get the train time we wanted. if you want to take fast and cleaner and newer trains in italy, a reservation is required.

If you have the time, reserve in advance. Waiting for the last 10 min. is going to be stressful.
