Haven't gone first to the article to see what they say....but I most likely 'over-covered' this aspect of my travels! I made copies of virtually everything....passport, drivers license, ATM cards, credit cards, flight tickets, train passes....2 paper copies of each, one for me in my pack and one to leave home with my daughter. I also had all copies burned onto a CD for easy and immediate forwarding should I need them and also left that with my daughter. And also took that CD and emailed it to myself so it was right there if I needed to have it in a pinch. Whatever the article said, losing my 'important' papers is always my biggest nightmare when on the go. Particularly my passport....I am totally phobic about it. Think it came from living overseas for so many years....but even here in FL, if you see me out of my house anywhere I can guarantee you my passport is on me! Nutso! ;D

I think what I did last year was email these copies to my Yahoo account. But I probably should have taken some paper copies too (although my husband had them at home and I could have called him).
It would probably be a good idea to have consulate/embassy info available for major destinations also, so you can get help right away if need be.
Would you recommend against leaving your passport in the hotel safe in Europe? On previous trips, I have always carried it around with me, because I wouldn't want to leave it at the hostel, but on this trip we will have both in-room safes and safes available at the front desk.
Not to beat a dead horse ;D from another thread, but the article also mentioned something about the relative safety of debit vs. credit cards.

Well....right in line with my passport phobia is knowing where the nearest US soil is. I always have addresses and phone numbers of embassies and consulates for anywhere I am visiting in my little 'info' notebook that I carry around with me everywhere. That's probably overkill too, but it just takes a few minutes to get the info while still at home and in an 'emergency' I may not be thinking too straight so I like to just have it available in a hurry. I have left loads of stuff in hotel safes, money, credit cards, airline tickets....and never have had a single problem. But, as I say I l aways have my passport on me.
