this may be obvious to some, however....
when you are going from town to town on the train and have your entire backpack, do you check you luggage, or do you take it all on the train with you?? and do you have to stamp your rail pass or check in somewhere?

It's not like flights! You just carry your pack on with you. If you are lucky, there will be a 'luggage area' at the end of the car where you can dump your pack. If not, you'll have to heave it up onto the overhead racks or if in 1st class in between the seats. Regardless of where you end up stowing it it goes right with you in the same car. There is no check in as such for luggage....it goes where you go.

i'd suggest keeping an eye on your luggage. it might not be there when you reach your destination if you leave it at the end of the car.
most people are honest. but, do you want to risk it? a former poster, also named David, who went by "Snorkleman" suggested putting your bag on the rack over the seats across from you in a compartment. that way, you can keep an eye on it more easily.

i spent 3 trips being paranoid about my pack....last 2 I was much more relaxed. Yes, I like to be 'facing' the end of the car that my pack is in, or somehow keep it in line of sight. But thus far my experience has been that no one wants to heave your heavy pack off to get your dirty clothes. ;D Anything of value is in my day pack/messenger bag right with me at my seat. Which I highly suggest, no matter the mode of transport.......valuable, hard to replace, keep it next to you! Heavy pack full of clothes and guidebooks...stow it where you can find a spot...and try to watch it. ging

Yeah, very few people would want to end up with a bag of dirty socks and underwear! Anyone targetting tourists knows that most keep their valuables in their day pack. It's a good idea to keep your large back pack in view or nearby, and some train services require luggage to be labelled with the owners details. The conductor on some trains will also ask whose luggage is whose and label it accordingly, so they keep an eye on it too.

since the 3/11 train bombings in Madrid, and the 7/7 train/bus bombings in London, i'd hope the personnel would be more circumspect about unattended bags on trains! and some train services require luggage to be labelled with the owners details. The conductor on some trains will also ask whose luggage is whose and label it accordingly, so they keep an eye on it too.
