How close is the beach from the Fulimicio airport?
Is it worth visiting while waiting for the flight (flying out at 11pm)

Uhmmm.....actually, Rome is not known for it's 'beach'. This is the first time I can ever recall having a question about this. The airport is about 30k southwest of the city and fairly close to Ostia which takes about 30 minutes using the Metro B line and changing to the Ostia Lido train from Porta San Paolo. Since both are very close to the shore I suppose there might be some sort of beach area around there, but frankly I've never heard of it.

I've just seen this site on a TV program, but Anzio, which I think is at the seaside and near Rome, also has a cemetery with graves of many American (and probably other Allied) soldiers.

Yes there is a beach in that area and Romans who don't go away for holidays/the weekend in Summer often go there, but it's by no means the nicest in term of European beaches: it was once, but the town of Ostia got more populated and it's pretty dirty now, sometimes they close the "beach" because the water is too polluted. "Lido di Ostia" is the Ostia beach which is close to the ancient harbour of Rome.
As DOM said, you take the Metro Linea B, then another train, then a bus - but if you're looking at a way to fill in time before flying out of Fuimicino (Leonardo da Vinci) airport, this probably isn't the best thing as it's a hike (take a cut lunch and a compass!) out and back and it doesn't really link up well for you to train out to the airport.
I remember reading something about a marathon from Rome to Ostia - not sure when it is, but it would make it crowded on that date. There are ruins there, but I'm guessing that's not what you were looking for.
