I expect to be visiting Venice for the first time this fall, and wanted to get the details on getting from the train station into the main part of town. The Guidebooks provide some good info, but I still need to "fill in a few blanks". Hopefully someone here can answer a few questions:
> After getting of the train at Venezia Santa Lucia, are the Vaporetto stops easy to find?
> Where does one buy the tickets for the Vaporettos?
> The Guidebooks suggest that the #1 or #82 Vaporettos are best for getting to Piazza San Marco. Any comments on that?
> Finally, I seem to remember that someone here posted a note several months ago regarding some "aggressive" types at the Vaporetto stops, trying to push tourists into using a particular boat (no doubt they get a "cut" of the fares). I'm not too concerned about them bothering me, but was curious whether this practise is still happening?
I may have a few other questions as I review my travel plans. Judging by the activity on the Boards lately, it looks like most of our "regulars" are on holidays, but thanks to anyone that is able to help with these questions.
Cheers!!!

hey eagle!
the vaporetto stops are very easy to find. in front of the train station. i do beleive there are machines that sell vaporetto tickets at the stops. #1 i recall going to san marco. however, venice is itty bitty. best viewed on foot. that said. we did go down the grand canal twice for kicks... once at night (pretty!) and once in the day to go to murano. other than that it was all on foot.
don't remember any aggressive types either... but that's just me... i was thera bout a year ago now.
oh, make sure you have a decent map of venice or be willing to pay for one. unlike many cities in europe, it does not have a free one at the TIC.
hope that helps eagle!

venice is a very beautiful city, though small compared to rome and other cities. jules is right. the best way to get to san marco is by foot. my bf and i just walked around the city and saw all the awesome shops that they have along the side streets. it was strange that the TI did not provide free maps. we had to buy one coz we got lost but it was only a few euros. if you use the vaporetto i advice that you use them on the way out. let us know what you think of the city!!!
