Did a search and nothing came up concerning the question I had. I was wondering if there is any way to get a student discount on Trenitalia. I'm a little bit confused by all the different fare types. Do these fares only apply to Italian citizens? If there's no discount, I must choose the "Standard" fare option right?
It looks like Trenitalia doesn't offer roundtrip. At least that's what I think so we have to buy one-way tickets from Point A to Point B then back?
Last question: Is it cheaper to buy on the Trenitalia website rather than Rail Europe?
Merci! ;D

PONR, as far as I'm aware, the only students who benefit from a discount card on Italian trains are Italian students under 18y.o. as they often hold "travel cards" for Trenitalia. Their site is difficult to find info on (even in Italian). Generally speaking, if you're under 26, you qualify for a discount anyway, so showing your student card may help. I thought there was a Youth Pass (Junior Pass?) available for train travel in Italy through Trenitalia (I stopped qualifying for it years ago so haven't looked since!), but you might have to have it issued once you're there.
They do offer roundtrip (i.e. return/ritorno) just not on their website for some reason. At the stations, it's easy emough to purchase return tickets, but they are usually the same cost as buying two seperate tickets, that is there is no discount for the return journey.
As far as buying on the website for Trenitalia - is there any reason why you want to buy it before you get there? It's easy enough to buy individual tickets a few days in advance once your'e in the country. If you do get a rail pass through Rail Europe, perhaps include Italy in it as it will save the hassle of sorting tickets out. Don't know which option suits you best, but be assured that buying tickets at stations in Italy is pretty easy (either at machine or at ticket window).
Prego! ;D

Thanks madamtrashheap - I was just curious about the fares on Trenitalia. I think I'm more likely to buy the tickets ahead of time so I just wanted to know a little bit more information concerning this train company.
That sucks about not having a student discount available. I'm turning 23 next month so I guess I'm stuck with the "Standard" option if I did buy my tickets online through the website unless someone magically points me to the right fare type. Hehehehe!
Thanks again!

Thanks madamtrashheap - I'm turning 23 next month so I guess I'm stuck with the "Standard" option if I did buy my tickets online through the website If you're set on buying them ahead of time, then OK, but I'm sure you'll find it cheaper and will get the answers you need once you're there. From memory you're travelling in June, yeah? Even then you'll be fine a day or two in advance, except for night trains where you need to reserve a bunk/sleeper anyway. The Trenitalia Flexipass (youth) is the one you're looking for, but even then I'm not sure how much of an advantage it will be. It's around US$150 for 4 days travel within two months. Do the calculations and see if it fits into your budget vs a Eurail or Rail Europe pass for the applicable countries. I know you'd like to be all set before you land, but sometimes it's better to leave a little bit of the trip "unplanned" - you never know what you'll find. ;D
