Hi all! We are going to France, Germany, Austria, Italy and Spain in May. We will be flying from Italy-Spain, and Spain-France, so I thought getting the Eurail Select pass for 4 countries would be okay (10 days travel)? My question is, once we are in Spain, will we just buy 'local' train tickets (Madrid-Bilbao-Barcelona?). If I choose the 5-country select pass to include Spain, will this provide transport within Spain? What is the cheapest option? Please help!!

Checking the prices, you will need about 40-50 euros for p2p-tickets from Barcelona to Bilboa, and about 40 for Bilboa - Madrid. (*providing, my spanish is good enough: In Spain the prices vary by the type of trains you are taking) I looked up the prices of flights by Spanair yesterday, they'll fly you for 35 euro from Barcelona to Biblao, and also 35 euros for Biblao - Madrid. So that would be cheaper. If your 5-country pass, cost you 70 euro more than a 4-country pass, I would consider the Spanair tickets. www.spanair.com/web/en-gb/

armzie, if your Rail pass includes Spain, the cost of rail tickets there will be included. However, the cost of reservations (if required on some routes) is not included in the cost of the rail pass (nor is the fee for couchettes or sleepers). I haven't checked your proposed Itinerary, but one point to be careful of is travelling through a country that is not included on your rail pass (for example, a trip from Germany to Italy that happens to travel through Switzerland). If your chosen rail trip fits that criteria, it's necessary to buy separate P-P tickets for the portion of the trip that is not included in your rail pass. Once you have your Itinerary more or less finalized, type your stops into www.railsaver.com and the site should provide a fairly accurate estimate on the best Rail pass for your trip. One final point to mention, you can buy your Rail passes from this web site (check the links on the home page), which helps to support our efforts here. The cost is the same to buy from GFE. Cheers!!!
