hi,
do i need to make train reservations, or can i just go and buy a ticket on the day i want to leave. and also is it cheaper or more expensive if i do make reservations.

Whether to make reservations or not depends on a couple of factors. First, some trains (usually the high speed trains such as the TGV and some inter-city trains) have mandatory reservations for all seats. Trains requiring reservations are normally listed on the rail websites. Also, reservations would probably be a good idea for those travelling on holiday weekends or other "busy" times.
Reservations are more expensive, due to the fact that a reservation fee is charged in addition to the cost of the ticket. Travellers using a Rail pass must also pay for the reservations, as this is not normally included in the cost of the pass.

Also, taking into account your other itinerary post, if you end up taking any nighttrains these also require reservations.
