August is the height of the Summer season and the ferries to the islands are full every trip, so I'd suggest either booking your ticket online or as soon as you arrive in Athens (assuming you have time there first - can't recall your exact itinerary right now). You can book at Pireaus with the ferry company you want to travel with (they have offices at the dock) or if you're having trouble you can use a local travel agent to sort tickets, but you should be fine to book directly, just don't rely on buying a ticket on the same day of travel. It does happen, but it's a rarity. Hellenic Ferries have a high speed ferry to Santorini (Thira) that takes around 4 hours, rather than the regular 8 hours.

Reserve during summer months most definitely - especially August because that's the HIGH season and everyone will be scrambling to use the ferries. Book with a travel agent or online.
You could spend a few more dollars (only about 10-15 dollars difference) puchasing a flight with Aegean Airlines and only have a 45 minute flight compared to a 9 hour ferry right. I purchased mine for about 45 euros, including taxes.
