Tried searching, came up with nothing, but I'm sure its there somewhere & I'm just using the wrong search words....if anyone could put up a link it'd be much appreciated
Basically I'm using Ryanair a good amount. I saw that there are additional charges for checking bags. No big deal, but I was talking with someone who said when she when a year and half ago they just got right onto the plane with their backpacks. Just wanted to know if this is possible, and if not should I pay for the pack check when I'm booking, or at the airport. Oh, and one more (the nice people here have been very helpful, so I'll just keep inquiring), insurance for bagage....necessary? & it asked my country of residence when looking at the booking...which is the US, they didn't list it, so does that mean I'm out???
As always, any and all info is appreciated. Take care and enjoy your travels!

I guess you already seen this thread: pretravel.proboards1.com/index.cgi?board=Transportation&action=display&n=1&thread=4861, that is almost similar, to your question. For RyanAir, and what they have to say: www.ryanair.com/site/EN/faqs.php?sect=bag&quest=cabinbaggageallowanceI am not familiar with US insurances, so I can't give you a clear answer, but if it is anything like here in Europe, than it depends on the terms of the travelinsurance you most likely already have (or will close, before leaving). Personaly I always book not too far ahead, and for smaller trips, so I don't take the extra insurance that is offered by airlines, because my own insurance covers almost everything anyway.

You won't be able to walk on to the plane with your full-size backpack now for two reasons:
1. the size will be pulled up by check-in crew (15kg/34lbs for check bags, 7kg/14lbs for hand luggage max) 2. the new regulations for liquids in carry-on luggages will prevent you from carrying toiletries, etc over 100ml.
As for insurance, unless your local health insurance covers you for overseas travel (including sickness and lost luggage), you'll have to take out seperate travel insurance to cover you for the time you're out of the US. There are lots of companies to choose from so just see which one suits your requirments and pocket.
