i was thinking it might be nice to rent a car from venice to interlaken to salzburg. nice scenery and all. maybe make a few stops on the way. has anybody done this. would it be much more expensive then a train.

If you are traveling with a couple of people 3 or 4 it might be worth it, as you can split the costs. You can make renting a car as expensive as you want. (the bigger the car, the higher the price). You also need to check if you are allowed to leave the country (in your case Italy)
Venice to Interlaken and back to Salzburg is a serious detour. Venice - Salzburg is doable in a day.
Also note, that in Italy, Switzerland and Austria, you need to pay to use the motorway, and you can expect, some mountainpasses, you need to pay for.
