between Ireland and Wales, what would you pick?
I bumped into two people I know casualy. Turns out they are moving home to Ireland and when I mentioned I'd be visiting Britain next year they invited me to drop in and see them in Ireland.
I hadn't even considered it, but I'm looking around and it's not that difficult to get to Dublin or Belfast.
Heck, there are even backpacking tours if I didn't meet up with them! I didn't consider this before.
Should I do Ireland? It would mean cutting out my stay in London and my trip to Wales.

Personally, I'd say Ireland. Then again, Wales isn't that much different and it's a fair bit closer to London etc (1hr 45 by train from London Paddington to Cardiff Central).
The only problem with Ireland is that transport can be a little ropey. Unless your friends live in a larger community (in other words a fairly big town or city) then it could be difficult to reach them without a car.

They would have to pick me up, or meet me someplace I could reach, that's for sure.
But even if I didn't see them, or stay with them, I really didn't consider visiting Ireland becuase I thought it was really difficult to get to. It's not! I could easily get to Liverpool from York and then hop the ferry straight to Dublin.
I've also looked into Paddywagon tours and they have some that look great.
Oh, so much to see! So little time!

Not only that, there are Ryanair and BMI flights from various points in the UK to get to Dublin or other Irish cities.
Hopefully Ging will weigh in on this, because I think she has experience with Ireland.
Personally I wouldn't give up on London for just about anywhere, but then I haven't been to either Ireland or Wales.

Well, I'm biased too......but here goes:
If you are set on Ireland, forget the ferries. Ryanair has flights much cheaper for the most part and 1/4 the time. (Of course sometimes their airports are a bit out of the way and that has to figure in as well.)
I spent 3 weeks in Irleand last year and am not a huge fan. Granted, I was there in Dec/Jan time frame, not the best weather but I did expect that. I just was not that enamoured with it. And I found the public transportation to be sketchy and slow, very limited trains and while the buses can get you most everywhere the scehdules are somewhat limited and they are slow and more often thatn not require a transfer or two. It was 'okay' but not a place that is on my must return to see again list.
OTOH....I am a great fan of Wales! Particularly the north coast. It's beautiful, numerous visitor friendly castles, great old towns....I loved my 10 days here indeed. And for all the Irish are reputed to be among the friendliest, the folks in Wales blew me away with their chattiness and kindness.
Simply my opinion....your results may well vary! ;D
