1st time to Europe and I'm overwhelmed w/the endless possibilities of transportation available.
Traveling to Germany and Italy to visit friends. Trying to decide if its worth it to purchase a Euro Pass Select Saver for 3 country/5 day ticket.
Also, are these tickets unlimited travel in each country and how does it work?
For instance: if we used it to travel from frankfurt to munich -- is that considered 1 day?
then from munich to venice -- traveling at night
then returning from venice to frankfurt.
Just trying to grasp this train system. Lived in Japan for 18 years...I can understand that system, but not Eurail -- go figure!
Thanks!

go to railsaver.com/railsaver.asp and plug in where/when you want to go by train. (ie, omit any flights or busses you plan to take.) any day on which you use the Eurail pass to ride a train, it counts as a day. the exception is a night train - if the train leaves after a certain time, don't remember if that time is 7 (or maybe 8) in the evening, and you don't change trains before midnight, you only need put the day you arrive at your destination. (eg, if you board a night train departing Munich at 23.40 <11.40pm> getting to Venice at 7.36 the next morning, you'd only need to mark one day on your pass - the day you get to Venice.) so, if you felt up to it, you could make day trips from Venice that day & the train would be covered by the railpass! does this clear it up any? - d

i think i understand...so even when it says "unlimited"travel w/in country -- it must be done w/in a 24 hr. period. for example...if we took the train in frankfurt to munich and then decided to go down to fussen -- and then back up to munich -- all needs to be done with in 24 hrs before its counted as another "day".

yes, that is precisely what it means, you could travel from Munich to Hamburg and back if you want to, as long as you do that in 1 day. München - Füssen - München is fine. As David explained, nighttrains have slightly different rules. But also take a look if it is worth it to use a pass. A returnticket from München to Füssen and back costs 41.60 euro according to www.bahn.de. Also Deutsche Bahn is having 'sales' of tickets to travel unlimited within Germany for 1 day for just 29 euros. (but last time I checked it was only on the German part of their website: www.bahn.de/p/view/preise/aktionspreis/dauer_spezial.shtml)
