Do eurorail passes cover the new high speed trains, or just the standard trains?

This is the section on eurail.com on High Speed trains: www.eurail.com/1_high_speed_trains. It differs from country to country. if you can use them, and when how much you need to pay for reservations, supplement etc.

lennon5387, Yes, Rail Passes do cover high speed trains. The Pass is used in place of a P-P ticket. However, virtually all high speed trains require mandatory reservations, and these are not covered by the Rail Pass. You'll have to pay for these separately. I wouldn't bother trying to buy them before departing on your trip, as it's so easy to do when in Europe.
If this is your first trip using a Rail Pass, be sure to familiarize yourself with the "7 PM Rule". It will be explained in the documents supplied with your Rail Pass. Also, be sure to validate your Rail Pass before using it for the first time, or you'll get a nasty surprise!
One final point, if you haven't bought your Pass yet, you can purchase these from the home page of this website. The cost is the same and it helps to support our efforts.
Cheers!

Thanks for the info. I used a Rail Pass on my first two trips to Europe when I was a teenager (20 years ago!), but things have changed considerably since then (price and options mainly ). The 7pm rule seems new since then. What is that exactly? Thanks again.

The 7pm rule seems new since then. What is that exactly? the 7pm rule is that if you're taking a night train and don't change trains before midnight, you can board that night train anytime from 7pm onward and just use one day from your Eurail flexpass, you write the next day, the day of your arrival, on the pass. - d

Cool, thanks. That may come in handy when we leave Strasbourg on our way to Bavaria, depending on if we need to change trains.
